Assignment 9
It is not necessary to type all of the following Assignment. Perform the exercises under the individual headings.
Let's review the controls that we have talked about so that we can effect the way our documents look.
Change Fonts
Type your full name
Select your First Name (One way is double click on the word)
Select a font, e.g., "Book Antiqua" (remember they are arranged alphabetically).
Click on the Bold Button
Notice the effect. The Bold Button is on when it is light gray in color and looks like it is depressed. Click on it again to turn it off.
Note: Some of the most common fonts are:
Arial
Times New Roman
Courier New,
but, you use whatever pleases you most.
Now select your Last Name. Take a look at all of the different fonts that are available. Find one that looks like script, i.e., like it was handwritten. You should have a font called "Monotype Corsiva", "Lucida Handwriting" or "Amazone BT". Make it bold. Does it still look too small? Change the font size to a larger one by clicking on 14 or 16. Note the effect on your typing.
Underline Type the following sentence.
This is really important!
Now we want to underline it to draw attention to it. Select the whole sentence. (You can drag your cursor through it or triple click on it.) Now click on the Underline Button
Italics You can also draw attention to a word by italicizing it.
Select your last name again
Find the Italics Button on your toolbar.
Turn it on and off the see the effect on your selected word.
Colors Type the numbers 1, 2 and 3.
Select the first digit, 1
Make it's size 12 points
Make it's color blue with the Fonts Color Button

Select the 2'nd digit
Make it's size 18 and color red
Select the 3'rd digit
Make it's size 24 and color green
Justifying
Type your full name again
Insert the cursor in front of your name by clicking there
Click all of the justify buttons to see the effect
![]()
Note in particular the effect of the Center Align Button. The last button seems to have no effect. That is because we did not create a whole line of text. Return the justify scheme to the default Left Justify position (the first button on the left.)
Now type the following paragraph.
Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country. We need more good men like we had in "The Greatest Generation". These people represent one of the highlights of American History.
Note that the left side of the paragraph is even, but the right is not. You may want your documents "Justified" on both sides.
Select the entire paragraph by triple clicking in it.
Press the Justify Button (on the far right side of this set of buttons)
Erasing Type the following paragraph.
Like various activities in Microsoft Programs, there are many ways to accomplish your goals. But, we frequently make mistakes.
Exercise: Select only the last sentence by dragging your cursor through it while holding down the left mouse button, or hold down the Control Key and click anywhere in the sentence. Now hit the Enter Key. Your selection is gone, it has been deleted. Suppose you change your mind and want it back. On your menu bar click Edit -> Undo to make it return.
Erasing with the Backspace Key and Delete Key Place the insertion point before the word "goals" in the paragraph you typed above. Notice the effect of hitting the Delete Key and Backspace Key. The Delete Key erases to the right or in front of the inserted cursor. The Backspace Key erases to the left or in back of the inserted cursor.
Select All, and Undo
Suppose you have typed a whole document and decide you want to change the font, font size, bold property or justify property for the entire document. You can select the entire document by various methods:
Drag your cursor down the left margin while holding down on the left click button, or
Click Edit -> Select All from the drop down menu
Note: ALWAYS be careful when you are selecting text. What happens if you press the enter key while text is selected? ........You DELETE the selected text!
What do you do if this happens? How do you fix it?
Click Edit -> Undo
UNDO will accomplish just what it says. If you make a mistake, or make a change that you do not like, Click the Edit -> Undo menu. Try it! That is select the whole document and hit Enter. Wow, Serious mistake. Click Edit -> Undo to correct it.
Select the entire document again.
