Word Processing

Assignment 3

Today's Objectives:

1. We  will enter and change text.

2. We will understand Ctrl+Shift +Space Bar.

3. We will demonstrate an understanding of automatic word wrap.

4. We will demonstrate the process of adding text to existing text.

Directions: Type the following paragraphs exactly as you see them. After typing the following paragraphs, save the assignment as "wp3".

ENTERING AND CHANGING TEXT

As you type, characters appear in the printable area. When your text reaches the right edge of the document, it automatically wraps around to the next line. Microsoft Word wraps lines at spaces between words. If you don't want two words to be broken-up between two lines (proper names, for example), type a non-breaking space between them by pressing (Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar).

The only time you need to press the ENTER KEY is when you want to end a paragraph. Pressing the Enter Key moves the insertion point from the current line down to the next one and inserts an invisible return (or new paragraph) marker at the end of the line you were on. To insert extra blank lines in a document, press the return key for each blank line you want to add.

To display the invisible return, space and tab characters, choose Tools, Options, View and Formatting Marks and select All. After selecting All, select OK from the bottom of the window and it will then show you your formatting marks. To shut the invisible marks off follow the same procedure and uncheck the All box.  We mentioned earlier that there are many ways to accomplish the same goals in Microsoft programs.  We just used the drop down menu to turn on and off the hidden characters on the screen.  There is an easier way.  On your toolbar is a button with a backward P sign on it.  This is an easy way to turn the hidden characters on and off.

JUSTIFYING TEXT

Justifying text means aligning your paragraphs to the right, left or center of your page.  You can even keep both sides of the page even.  This is done with the Align Buttons on your toolbar.

Select a few lines of a paragraph by holding down the left mouse button and dragging your cursor over the text you wish to choose.  Push the align buttons to see the effects.  To de-select (or un-select) the text, click anywhere on the screen with your left mouse button.

ADDING TEXT

If you want to add text in the midst of other text in a document, just click to move the insertion point to the place where you want the next text to start and then begin typing. The characters you type are inserted at the insertions point's position and any text after that automatically moves over or down to accommodate it.
