Assignment 11
Insert and Manage Graphics in Word
We will practice with the following graphic.

Create a Folder to Store Your Graphics
Go to your Personal Folder in My Documents that you created earlier
Create a New Folder called "Graphics"
Storing Graphics in Your Folder
Log on to the Council on Aging Website and go to Word Processing Assignment 11
Right Click on the picture of Mickey, Minnie and Pluto. This picture is called "Lovers"
Select "Save Picture As" on the resulting menu
Now direct the picture to the new Graphic folder that you created in My Documents.
You can now close the Internet Connection.
Inserting Graphics into Word
Open the Word Program
In the New Document select "Insert -> Picture -> From File" on the Menu at the top of your screen
In the dialog box that results find your personal graphics folder and the "Lovers" graphic.
Click Insert at the bottom-right of the dialog box
You should now see the picture in your document.
Managing Graphics in Word
1. Moving the Picture on Your page
Note that there is a blinking cursor behind the new graphic
Click the Back Arrow (between the alphabet keypad and the number keypad on your keyboard)
Press the Space Bar a number of times to move the picture to the right, and the Backspace Key to move the picture to the left
Press the Enter Key to move the picture down the page.
Save and Close your document as wp11.
2. Rotating and Inverting Pictures on Your Page
You can not directly rotate and invert pictures in Word. All Versions of Windows however, have an accessory application called "Paint", which will allow us to manipulate graphics.
From your start menu (the Start Button at the bottom - left of your screen), select "Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Paint"
On the Menu at the top of your screen, select "File -> Open" and direct the dialog box to your personal folder and the "Lovers" picture. You will probably have to click the "Files of Type" arrow at the bottom of the dialog box to show All Files.
Select the "Lovers" picture from your folder and click the Open Button
Your picture is now in the "Paint" program
Select "Image" from the menu in Paint and then select "Flip/Rotate"
Notice the options, i.e., you can flip the picture horizontally or vertically and also rotate the picture a specified number of degrees
Play with these for awhile and observe the results.
As a final adjustment, flip the picture horizontally, i.e., Pluto and the moon will be facing to the right instead of to the left.
Save this picture as "Lovers2" in your personal folder and close the Paint program.
Return to Word and insert the 2'nd graphic into your wp11 document.
Arrange the pictures on your page to suit your taste, by placing the blinking cursor in front of each picture and using the Space Bar, Backspace Key, and Enter Key to move them on your page.
3. Changing the Size of your Picture
Select one of the pictures by clicking on it
Notice there is a frame around the picture that you selected
Place your cursor over the lower right - bottom corner of the picture. Notice that your cursor changes to an arrow slanted at 45 degrees with an arrow at both ends. This means that you can stretch the picture at a 45 degree angle and keep the picture proportions the same
Place your cursor at the middle of any side of the picture and notice that the cursor forms either a vertical or horizontal arrow. This means that you can stretch the picture in the vertical or horizontal direction, but your picture proportions will change.
4. Adding Text to your Document
a. A Label for Your Picture
You can add a label for a graphic by selecting from the Menu at the top of your screen Insert -> Textbox
Your cursor will form a cross on your screen, and this will allow you to drag a box below your picture. To do this click your left mouse button where you want the box to start, hold down the button until you drag out the size of the box you desire. Release the left mouse button.
You can now type in the box at the blinking cursor
When finished typing, you can adjust the size of the box by grabbing the corners.
b. Typing Text around your Picture
You can tell Word that you want the picture to be in the middle of text, much like a magazine article
Select your picture by clicking on it, and then right click on it
Select the Format Picture option
Select the Layout Tab in the Format Picture dialog box
Note that you can control to type above and below the picture, around the picture and in front of or behind the picture. Practice with these options for awhile by typing text (You make it up) around your picture.
Finally, note that you can control if the picture is aligned to the right, left or center of your document. The "Other" Button means that you have control of where the picture is to be placed.
