HOW DO I SHUT OFF MY COMPUTER
@
The Center for Council on Aging
Today's Objectives:
1. We will demonstrate how to start a PC correctly.
2. We will login to the network correctly without changing the preset "User Name".
3. We will demonstrate the ability to shut down the computer correctly.
DIRECTIONS: Read through the following information and follow the procedures listed when you attend class. You can use the lab anytime class is not in session and you will follow the same start and shut down procedures during that time.
There is a power button on the computer (tower) next to the monitor. You need to press the power button, one time, and it will start the computer. Take the time to see if the little, green light underneath the power button is on. If that little, green light is on, that means the computer is already on and if you press that button, you are going to shut the computer off incorrectly. If that light is on and the screen is dark, make sure the power is turned on for the monitor. The power may be on and the monitor may be asleep--resting. If the power is on the tower and the monitor and the screen is black--either press the spacebar, or move the mouse and the screen will wake up.
**NOTE
If the computer was not on and you start the computer from the power button, there will be a networking window that will open shortly after you press the power button. You are not to enter anything in that networking window when you start the computer. Many students want to enter their name in the networking window and it does not go there.
The following networking window belongs to the third computer on the right when you walk into the lab. It is essential that it stays "coa3" when we start that computer on the right. If we change that user name, it will forget the password for networking that I have entered for the computer to remember when it is logged in correctly as "coa3".

This is the window that will appear when you start the first computer on the right hand side when you walk into the lab. Do not enter anything in this window, just single, left click on the OK button. If you enter information in this window, it will confuse our network and you will not be able to print.
By the way, each computer has a different user name. When you walk into the lab on the right side starting with the first computer, it is coa1, coa2 and coa3. When walking into the lab starting on the left side, it is coa6, coa5, and coa4. This allows us to use a network format where we can utilize three printers.
This is an example of what the first computer on the left would look like when you get this networking window--the user name reads coa6:

In order to complete the starting of the second computer on the right, you would single, left click on the OK button without changing anything in this networking window.
The Computer Lab's Internet Connection
The computer lab is using a new DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), high speed connection.
You may want to always work on the computer you use in class when you utilize the lab during non-lab times (unless someone else is already using that computer you normally use.)
Remember when you start your computer, leave the networking window unchanged. You will then need to start the Internet connection. You will do this by double, left clicking on the Internet Icon on the desktop. The desktop is the opening screen after you have successfully started the computer. The icon that you will be double, left clicking on looks like this:

After you have successfully double, left clicked on the Internet Icon, our home page should open.
There are two ways to shut the computer down--the correct way and the wrong way. The correct way to shut the computer down is by pointing your mouse to the "Start" button in the lower, left corner of your screen. You will single, left click on the "Start" button. After single, left clicking on the "Start" button, you will receive a popup window that looks like:

When you see this window appear, you would move your mouse up so the words "Shut Down" are highlighted. When you move onto the words "Shut Down", you will single, left click. This will take you through the procedure to shut the computer down correctly. After single, left clicking on the words "Shut Down", you will see the following window appear:

You need to look closely at the options and one of the options is "Shut Down". This option needs to have the little dot next to it. If "Shut Down" does not have the little dot next to it, you need to single, left click on the little dot next to the words "Shut Down". This will allow you to shut the computer down correctly. After you have ensured that the little dot is selected next to the words "Shut Down", you will single, left click on the OK button. Your computer will now shut down correctly and you may press the power button on the monitor. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PRESS THE POWER BUTTON ON THE TOWER AGAIN--IF YOU DO, IT WILL TURN THE COMPUTER BACK ON!
