Assignment 9

Today's Objectives:

1. To visit three encyclopedias to obtain information, i.e.,

2. Demonstrate how to search for information.

DIRECTIONS: You can visit the encyclopedia sites listed above to obtain answers about the following Subjects. You will type the subjects in the search box once you arrive at the sites   Look at both sites to see the type of information available immediately on a specific subject in an encyclopedia.  The underlined part of the sentence is the key to your thought process, i.e., if you are going to use the encyclopedia to look up information, it should be a very specific subject.  This is in contrast to using the dictionary to look up a word, or Ask Jeeves to find general information on a question, such as "Who was the 14th US President".  IMPORTANT:  Do not ask a question in the encyclopedia or dictionary search boxes.  These sites look for a specific word or words.  For example if you ask Jeeves, "Who invented the light bulb", you will get some great web sites to explore.  But, if you ask the encyclopedia "Who invented the light bulb", you will get no results.  For the encyclopedia, just put light bulb and do a search, then look for an essay on it's history.

1. When did most members sign the Declaration of Independence?

2.  What are the names of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

3. Who was Helen Keller?

4. Who invented the light bulb?  Find another name besides Edison associated with that invention.  Remember if you have run into a road block getting answers, you can always go to Ask Jeeves.  It might be interesting to go to Jeeves and put in "invent light bulb" to see what you can find.

5.  What is a nova

6.  When was Walt Disney born, and in what city?

7.  Compare finding information on the Sternum in an encyclopedia and the dictionary.

Note that you frequently run into a situation with the encyclopedias where you have to pay to get more information.  What is our thought process when this happens?  Go to the dictionary or to Ask Jeeves.  We will find our answer!
