Assignment 5

Today's Objectives:

1.  Demonstrate understanding of entering a new address on the address line.

2.  Search for information at a web site.

3.  Demonstrate understanding of following links on a web site.

DIRECTIONS:  Type the following address on the address line, www.ask.com.  This web site is a search engine that will locate information for you.  You have to follow links upon searching for the following questions.  It will drive you to sites that match your inquiry.  You can use this assignment to answer each question.   Even if you can use other search engines, please use this one in class so that we all get the same answers.

1.  How many great lakes are there? ( Hint:  The Ask search engine  doesn't really care about the how and why part of your question.  He only looks at the key words like "Great Lakes". )   For this first exercise just put "Great Lakes" in the question box, and click on SEARCH.   Follow the links in the following order:

 

2.  What is the largest great lake?

 

3.  What is the smallest great lake?

 

4.  When was the Mackinac Bridge opened to the public?  (Hint:  put "building Mackinac bridge" in the question box and click ASK.  Look for links that have history mentioned in description.)

 

5.  What are the signs of congestive heart failure?  Ask will give you hundreds of sites for this.  Use the menu on the right to filter through the results by preferred topics.

 

6.  Who won the world series in 1972?  Use Ask.

 

7.  How did Michigan get the nickname of the Wolverines State?  (Hint:  try "Michigan nickname wolverine state" in the question box and click ASK).    Notice the summaries at the screen right.  One of them should say "Michigan Nickname".  Follow the links to look for an explanation.  What do you think would have happened if you had put the keywords "Michigan state nickname wolverine" in the search bar?

 

8.  What is Celebrex used for?  Try Ask.

 

9.  What are hotdogs made out of?(Hint:  start with Ask and look for the howstuffworks link)

 

10.  What is your Gastrocknemius?  Make a little sketch-draw it!  (Hint:  start with the dictionary for this one)

 

11.  What is an Aardvark? (Hint:  start with the dictionary and note the opportunity to see an illustration)

 

12.  When did the Civil War end?  (Suggest using Ask for this one).

 

13.  Who was our 14th President?  (Suggest using Ask for this one).

 

14.  Which Ocean is the largest?  (Try Ask).

15.  What colors make red?  This is a tricky one.  Use Ask and in the question box ask for information on "primary colors" and "artists color wheel".

 

16.  What are the ingredients of ice cream, i.e., find a recipe (Hint:  put homemade ice cream in the search bar as your keywords when you use Ask).

 

17.  Where is your Femur?  The Encylopedia, Dictionary or Ask  will all get you started on this.

18.  What are the benefits of exercise for seniors?  (notice the link on  the right column that is blue and says seniors when using the ask.com site.)

19.  Where, and what room is your favorite meeting place?
