Today's Objectives:
1. Recognize the links offered by
classic.mapquest.com and
www.map.google.com websites.
3. Understand that you can get maps of any area or specific
driving instructions to a specific destination.
4. Enter correct information to get specific driving
instructions.
We will look at a mapping sites
http://classic.mapquest.com
- Turn the Address Bar blue by clicking on it. This means that you can
enter a new address into the bar.
- Type classic.mapquest.com and press the Enter Key.
- Read your screen and check for required information to see where it is
placed
- Click the Get Map button
- The sliding scale on the map upper left will allow you to change
magnification (zoom) to view more of the area (with less detail) or get a
closer view of the area of interest (more detail).
- Note that above the map you can "Select Category", which will help you
find nearby restaurants, gas stations, shopping or just about any business you
may need to find.
- In addition above the map, you can see buttons to Get a New Map (Map
Button), or get driving directions to (or from) the location you just mapped.
- Select To or From and add the desired second address. then press the
Add Location button. If you can't think of a second address, get
directions to the PH Senior Center at
600 Grand River Ave, Port Huron, MI 48060
- Press the Get Directions button below the Address Boxes
- Study the great information available to you, including total distance,
estimated driving time and detailed driving directions.

- Turn the Address Bar blue by clicking on it. This means that you can

- Type maps.google and then use our shortcut of holding down the Control Key
and press the Enter Key. This types http://www. and .com around our
address entry to create a complete web address.
- Look for the "Set Default Location" link. You will probably place
your home address in the resulting box and save it.
- Read the information required in the box. As you start typing,
Google will try to anticipate your location. When you see your address
click on it to get the desired map.
- The sliding scale on the map upper left will allow you to change the magnification
(zoom) to view more of the area (with less detail) or get a closer view of the
area (more detail).
- When you click on the map, you will see a hand that closes. This
allows you to move the map around to explore nearby roads.
- Note that below the address you can change the default location (or remove
it).
- Above the map you can get directions.
Before we get directions, let's look at our maps. We want to find the
nearest restaurants. Above your map you have a Google search bar. In
the box type "restaurants" (without the ") . Google will find the nearest
restaurants and list them for you. You can find gas stations,
hospitals, schools, the nearest Best Buy. Usually you can find whatever
you may be searching for.
Now, lets get directions somewhere. If you can't think of a destination
on your own, type in the address for the Council on Aging Senior Center in Port
Huron:
-600 Grand River Ave.
Port Huron MI 48060
- Press the Get Directions button below the address boxes.
- Study the incredible information available to you, including total
distance, estimated time and detailed driving directions.
- Note the option next to the address boxes, to get reverse directions to
return. Below the address boxes you can choose options to avoid toll
roads or avoid major highways on short trips.
- Find directions to 5 locations from you house. While doing this
assignment, choose addresses that you are familiar with for your
future use--IF POSSIBLE.
